Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack for Mom, Baby and Partner
July 13, 2026·3 min read

Somewhere around week 35, "I should pack that bag" turns into "I need that bag now." A hospital bag checklist takes the panic out of it — pack once, calmly, and have it by the door so labor day is one less thing to think about. Here's what to actually bring, split by who it's for, plus what the hospital already provides so you don't over-pack.

When to have it ready: aim for 36 weeks. Babies keep their own schedule, and you don't want to be folding pajamas between contractions.

For Mom — labor and after

  • Photo ID, insurance card, hospital paperwork and birth plan (a copy in the bag, not just on your phone)
  • A long charging cable — hospital outlets are never near the bed
  • Warm socks with grippy soles and a robe you don't mind getting messy
  • Lip balm and hair ties (small things, big comfort)
  • Two going-home outfits, loose and forgiving — you'll still look a few months along
  • Nursing bras, high-waisted underwear, and your own toiletries
  • A pillow from home in a colored case (so it doesn't get lost in hospital laundry)
  • Snacks for after — you'll be hungry and the cafeteria won't be open

For Baby — coming home

The hospital provides more than you'd expect for the baby, so keep this short:

  • Installed car seat (they won't let you leave without it — do this before 37 weeks)
  • Two going-home outfits in different sizes (newborns vary)
  • A swaddle blanket and a weather-appropriate layer
  • A few pairs of socks/mittens and a soft hat
  • Diapers and wipes for the trip (many hospitals send you home with some, but bring a backup)

For Partner — the support crew

The person who forgets themselves entirely. Pack for them too:

  • A change of clothes and their own toiletries — stays can run long
  • Phone charger, snacks, a refillable water bottle
  • Cash/card for parking and the vending machine at 3am
  • A light blanket — hospital pull-out chairs are cold

What you can skip

The hospital almost always provides: gowns, mesh underwear, pads, basic toiletries, receiving blankets, diapers and wipes for the stay, and baby's first bath supplies. Don't double-pack these — bring the comfort versions of the things you'll actually prefer, and leave the rest.

Pack it once, breathe easy

  1. Pack for Mom, Baby and Partner in three separate pouches inside one bag
  2. Put copies of your ID, insurance and birth plan in the front pocket
  3. Install the car seat by 37 weeks
  4. Set the bag by the door at 36 weeks and forget about it
